Maureen Spencer, RN, M.Ed., CIC Infection Prevention Consultant
Maureen Spencer, RN, M.Ed., is certified in infection control and is currently the Corporate Infection Preventionist for Universal Health Services, Inc., with corporate headquarters in King of Prussia, PA. Although based in Boston, she travels to their 25 acute care hospitals providing consultative and educational services to their infection control programs.
She was previously the Infection Control Manager at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH), an orthopedic specialty hospital in Boston, Ma. and prior to that the Director of the Infection Control Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). She has a Bachelors degree in Nursing and a Masters of Education. One of the original pioneers in the field of infection control, she was awarded the APIC Carole DeMille lectureship in 1990 for excellence in the field of infection control while at MGH.
She has served on many national and local committees for the Association of Professionals in Infection Control and has presented numerous scientific abstracts at national conferences. She was selected as an APIC 2007 Hero of Infection Prevention, which was awarded at the 2007 Annual Educational Conference in San Jose, California. This was in honor of her work in establishing an MRSA and Staph aureus Elimination Program at NEBH.
Maureen has authored several articles and chapters related to infection control and was a contributing author in Barbara Gruedenmann's Comprehensive Perioperative Nursing Textbook, the APIC Curriculum for Infection Control Practice, Office Hysteroscopy and Nursing Clinics of North America - Critical Care.
In 2012 she was selected as one of the "Who's Who in Infection Prevention" by Infection Control Today.
